The easiest and best way to adopt a NYC shelter animal is to go to the shelter and adopt direct. The ACC has two areas on its website where the public can start the direct adoption process. Read more about these options below.
Option 1 – Adopt from ACC General Adoption List
Search the ACC website for healthy animals who have passed their SAFERs. For more information on a particular dog, email and call the ACC for further automated instructions. Contact the ACC ONLY if you are serious about adopting and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in person. Please do not email for status updates… the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. The adoption fee for these animals ranges from $25 to $400 (inquire about the fee for a specific animal with the shelter). Click here to access the ACC’s general adoption list.
Option 2 – Adopt from ACC At Risk List
The At Risk List also includes healthy animals, who also have passed their SAFERs, but who are on the At Risk List because there is no room for them — they could be killed the next morning. There is a $200 hold fee if adopting from the At Risk List. Follow the link below, scroll to the bottom of the page, create a login, reserve the animal, put down a $200 deposit ($50 non-refundable and $150 refundable after proof of spay/neuter), and complete the questionnaire – then call or visit the shelter. Note: You must go to the shelter within 48 hours of the animal being put on the list or it will likely be killed. Detailed instructions are provided on the ACC website.
