What is a SAFER?
Once an animal fails its SAFER (standardized behavior test intended to help predict possible future aggression in the home), it will be removed from the ACC website, and it may or may not remain in the shelter for the public to view and adopt if they go there in person.
What is a New Hope Placement?
If it is rated New Hope (NH) placement only, you cannot adopt the animal directly. You must work with an approved NH partner rescue group. Once an animal is sick, it too may be removed from the ACC website for adoption and it may be moved to isolation out of public view.
If you are Long Distance...
If you are long distance and you are unable to go to the shelter in person, then you will not be able to adopt from the To Be Destroyed list and you will need to work with two rescue groups - one here and one in your area who can do a home visit and vouch for you. Please try to save an animal on the Urgents or Super Urgents list in that case.
Do You Need to Surrender Your Pet?
If you are considering surrendering an animal to the NYC AC&C, due to problems (e.g., behavior, illness, landlord, etc.) please contact "Pet Help Partners" at 917.484.3169 before making any final decisions.
Pet Help Partners may be able to help resolve your problems so that your pet can remain with your family. You should also contact the local rescues for assistance as well as post on the Urgent Part 2 page.
After witnessing how these animals suffer in the shelter, we never want to see an animal go back there.
