As 2013 comes to a close and we look forward to a brighter 2014, I would like to take a moment to thank EVERYONE that has stood by Urgent and supported our cause. I have to say that Urgent has the greatest and most dedicated group of adminsthat I am honored to call friends. I don’t think anyone really understands the time and heart they put into this organization, but know that without them, there would be no Urgent. LOVE YOU GUYS!!
It amazes me that when Urgent started in 2010, we had just a few volunteers. Today there are DOZENS that help in all areas of our Facebook page, website and organization. That does not even include all our cross-posters, the army of people that regularly watch the threads and assist potential foster/adopters, or the volunteers that help the rescues collect pledges, process applications, do home visits, and assist with transports. It is surreal when you start to really think about it… and everyone involved needs to be applauded.
2013 brought us countless “New Beginnings” yet still we dealt with too much death. Our hearts soared and then our hearts broke daily, but we still found our way back everyday to start again. Along the way, we made new friends and our network continued to grow. As we move into the new year, Urgent will continue to grow and evolve. We make mistakes, we try new ideas, and if we fail, we will regroup, revise and revisit.
Aside from completing our name change, 2014 also brings some significant revisions to our “mission. ” Recently, we began to realize more and more that sometimes rescue starts before the animals enter the shelter. Many animals are surrendered because their owners simply can’t afford to care for them any longer or just don’t want to. Instead of waiting for them to enter “the system,” we need to start preventing it from happening. As of January 2014, Urgent will not only advocate for NYC shelter animals, but we will also attempt to assist as many “animals in crisis” that we can. Every animal we keep OUT of the NYC AC&C, or any shelter, is a life saved.
Our first priority will always be the NYC shelter animals, but we will not turn our backs on any animal that may be surrendered or killed, and we will support the rescues that assist those animals in crisis as well.
Thank you to everyone that shared, fostered, adopted, donated or just said a prayer in 2013. Thank you to the rescues that saved so many, and tried to save so many more. Thank you to the volunteers at the shelter that risk their hearts to take pictures, write bios and offer a bit of love to animals that have nothing.
My wish for 2014 is that we move closer to a day when adoptable animals will not have to die. I know it can happen… I know it will happen… we just all need to stick together and keep our sights set on the common goal and not the infighting that happens too often.
Happy New Year, Team Urgent!! Be safe, be happy and be well. Thank you for being a part of our family!
