If you’re new to PODR…… WELCOME!!!
THE TIME CRUNCH NITTY-GRITTY STUFF – but please read the rest too!
If you can ADOPT a cat, the easiest way to do this is to go NOW to ACC and adopt outright! ACC adoptions is open until 7pm, but they will not start a new adoption after 6pm.
If you cannot get to ACC to adopt and need a rescue to pull a cat for adoption, or if you can commit to FOSTER a cat for a rescue group until the cat is adopted, please state your offer with your contact information under the cat’s picture. If a rescue is able to help you, they will contact you. PLEASE OFFER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE!
PLEASE BE PREPARED TO FILL OUT AN APPLICATION AND PROVIDE 3 REFERENCES TO ANY RESCUE WHO CAN HELP YOU SAVE A CAT! Having this information available saves valuable time!
——————————–
We’re thrilled that this page has grown, and that you’re here on it! We want to remind our good ol’ “fans” and inform our new ones of roughly how this works. This page, “Pets on Death Row” (aka PODR) is in no way affiliated with New York City’s Animal Care and Control (ACC). If anything, we aren’t supposed to exist at all – the euthanasia lists that we post are not supposed to be public knowledge, so please, the #1 rule is that if you speak to the ACC at any point, do not mention this page! Yes, we believe the people at the ACC know the page exists, but they haven’t done anything to shut us down… if they get calls of people mentioning the page they might, though!
A lot of people are very against the ACC because of how many animals they put to sleep – remember that this is a forum for rescuing cats, not for bashing the ACC or it’s workers, some of whom are very helpful and work hard to help the animals. If you want to discuss the horrors of the ACC check out the “NYC Sunlight Coalition”, but don’t bash the ACC here on PODR – that’s the kind of thing that could lead them to begin shutting us down.
Okay, onwards and upwards- to the cats!
There are 3 types of photo albums on this page: the “To be Destroyed” albums which are cats scheduled to be euthanized the following morning, the “Safe!” albums which include cats we know have been rescued/adopted, and the “First Alert” albums which show photos of cats who were recently brought into the ACC and will be deemed either adoptable (and put up for adoption) or not adoptable (and scheduled to be put to sleep).
Reasons the ACC lists for euthanasia:
1) disease-ill (this can range from the sniffles to caner)
2) too-young (kittens under 8weeks old)
3) temper (cats who are deemed to have unfit temperaments for adoptions- this can range from vicious cats to ferals to nice cats who are nervous or don’t like to be scruffed)
4) injured (the most legitimate reason to put a cat down, includes such things as broken limbs)
If you are interested in FOSTERING or ADOPTING a cat/kitten please say so on that cat’s photo and on the main thread of the album that the cat is in. You’ll need to state where you live (no need to give exact location, just general area), and if you are able to be a self-sufficient (money wise) foster – this only applies to foster. It is assumed that if you are adopting you are paying for your new cat’s needs J
There are some approved rescues who look on the PODR site for wonderful people like you would like to get cats “pulled” (meaning pulled off the euth. list) for adoption/fostering, but because of the nature of the content of this page, the rescues don’t want to risk having their ability to pull taken away by the ACC. Therefore, they have to be careful about making themselves known. If a rescuer does make themselves known here, please be respectful of the position they are in- they want to help save these cats as much as the rest of us, but without a CONCRETE offer to foster or adopt one of these cats, there’s little they can do without more resources. It’s nothing personal, but rather, the facts of life (and of rescue!) So, generally if a rescue can help you, they will make themselves known on the page or send you a fb msg.
It’s been rumored lately that if someone wants to adopt a cat who is on a euth list, that they can go to the ACC the morning of the scheduled euthanasia, and adopt the cat… this was not so before- it used to be a strict rule that once a cat was put on the euth list ONLY a rescue coupled pull it. If the ACC is changing this rule that would be great, as it would mean that more of you can go and get the cat on your own without time-crunch in finding a rescue who can help to pull. Not all rescues have “pull rights”- only ones who are partnered with New Hope (the department of ACC that works to place animals in need of rescue) and rescues by the organization called “The Mayor’s Alliance”. Mayor’s Alliance rescues are listed in the discussion tab.
Under a cat’s photo the comments should be kept to the cat. One of the only things that PODR will not tolerate is negative drama created by individuals. Rescue is dramatic, often in a good way, often in a stressful way, but when it becomes a negative sort of drama where people point fingers, things can get ugly. Verbally rude accusations will simply be deleted. If you have an issue with someone on this page please take it up with them in personal message, not on this page.
The last important thing to touch on is funding. PODR is just a networking forum put together by some people who wanted to help…. We’re not an organization or a 501c3 or a rescue group by technically terms- so we do not take donations. That being said, sometimes individual people and or rescue groups on PODR want to save a cat but cannot afford to do so without funding. If that’s the case, they can set up a “chip-in” which is a link that takes you to a page where you can donate money to that person through a paypal account. While we at PODR try to allow chip-in’s of only those who seem honest and trustworthy, keep in mind that this is a public forum, so you are donating at your own risk. Issues with chip-in’s are few and far between, and there are some people on here who use chip-in’s a lot and so we know they are tried and true J
Just keep your eyes open, be aware, and remember that everyone is here to help! We all have the same goal in mind: SAVE THE CATS!!!
Not every cat is able to be saved… there are too many, and some are too sick or injured, but thanks to this page we can confidently say that a good few hundred have been saved from being put to sleep at the ACC. We love our members and appreciate what you do – sometimes people thank us (the PODR admins) for what we do, but I must say that the “fans” of this page have done the most.
People ask frequently, “I’m too far to adopt or foster, so how can I help?” The answer is first, you can network; share and crosspost the photos and albums so that your friends and family see and hopefully take an interest. You never know who will come out of the woodwork from your facebook page to ask about a cat you’ve posted! Sharing/crossposting also help to raise awareness about what happens at the ACC. Second, a great way to help is donation to chip-in’s if your wallet will permit you to. Third, any advice/expertise you have about cats is appreciated. There is often medical jargon on the cat’s photos and not everyone understands it. Also, should you come to learn and understand how this page runs, helping others who are new to the page and have a lot of questions, is super, and much appreciated by the admins!!!
WE LOVE OUR FANS!!!!!
