ACC just fired the hardest working person in the Manhattan shelter. This means that effective immediately, no one will be taking pictures of every single dog that enters the shelter, and not a single dog will get a euth plea.
Have you noticed all the crystal-clear, professional-looking photos that appear on this site for Manhattan dogs every day? Almost all of those are thanks to Emily Tanen of the New Hope department, whom the shelter fired this morning. What was the reason? They did not want her photographing dogs with humans in the pictures! You read that correctly — snuggling, kissing or even petting a dog is now against their rules, and without warning, Emily was fired for it. More dogs would die on the days Emily had off from work because no one else would bother to send pleas to rescue groups begging for their help, or get last-minute pictures of them. Now imagine that on every day of the week.
We cannot let them get away with this. How many of you out there have adopted a dog from the Manhattan shelter because you fell in love with them through Emily’s photos? How many rescue groups have worked side by side with Emily to save lives? How many rescues have then used Emily’s pictures to help get their dogs adopted? How many of you are outraged that the shelter would fire the person who fights hardest for the city’s dogs? The damage from firing Emily Tanen will result in countless dogs being killed, and we cannot stand by and let it go unanswered. You will start to see a drastic change in the number of Manhattan dogs on this site without pictures, and rescues will no longer receive professional, thoughtful pleas about dogs in need. This is a reprehensible act that worsens the already dismal state of animal welfare at ACC. The city of New York needs to hear you.
